Women's Tennis Sweeps Weekly Liberty League Awards

TROY, N.Y. – After finishing off a successful Spring Break with three wins in four matches, the Union College women's tennis team was rewarded with a sweep of the weekly Liberty League awards, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. Sophomore Chara Meidani was named the Singles Player of the Week, sophomore Kennedy Alexis and first-year Luisa Arizpe-Sierra were tabbed as the Doubles Team of the Week, and Arizpe-Sierra also earned Rookie of the Week honors.

As a team, Union went 5-1 in six Spring Break matches in Orlando, including three wins in four matches on Monday and Tuesday to round out the week. The Garnet Chargers earned 8-1 and 9-0 victories over Augustana College and Whitworth University, respectively, on Monday. After dropping a 6-3 decision to DePauw University on Tuesday morning, the team rebounded to hand St. Olaf College its first loss of the year by the same score.

Meidani posted a perfect 4-0 record at second singles to finish off a flawless 6-0 Spring Break in singles play and earn her first career Singles Player of the Week honor. She started the week with a pair of straight-set victories on Monday, winning 6-0, 6-4 against Augustana and 6-4, 6-4 over Whitworth. She fought hard for a 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, (10-7) win over DePauw in Tuesday's first match before completing her undefeated week with a 6-0, 6-2 win against St. Olaf. The sophomore ranks second on the team with a 10-6 singles record so far this season, including a 5-2 mark at the second flight.

Alexis and Arizpe-Sierra had a perfect 4-0 mark at second doubles for Union as well, finishing off a 5-1 Spring Break record. The pair started the week with back-to-back 8-5 wins over Augustana and Whitworth on Monday. The tandem needed to battle for their wins on Tuesday, outlasting DePauw in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (8-6), and doing the same later in the day against St. Olaf, 8-7 (7-4), helping to deliver the Oles their first loss of the year at second doubles. Alexis and Arizpe-Sierra are 6-5 on the doubles courts so far this season, including a 4-3 mark at the second flight.

Doubles play was just part of what earned Arizpe-Sierra her first Rookie of the Week honor, as she went 7-1 overall during the week thanks to a 3-1 mark at third singles. She started the week with four wins on Monday, seeing her singles sets get better throughout the day in 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-0 victories at the third flight.  Both of her Tuesday matches came down to supertiebreakers, and she dropped her only match of the week by a 1-6, 6-0, (10-6) margin versus the Tigers before coming back to win 6-1, 4-6, (12-10) against the Oles. The first-year currently ranks second on the team with 18 total victories so far in 2023-24, posting a 10-6 singles mark and an 8-9 doubles record.

Union is slated to have a busy week of action coming up, beginning on Thursday with a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup at SUNY Oneonta.
