GENEVA, N.Y. – First-year 
Samantha Jacobs posted a perfect 4-0 day to lead the Union College women's tennis team to a successful day one of the Mary Hosking Invitational, hosted by William Smith College on Saturday.
 
All 10 Union participants had at least one win on the day, led by Jacobs with a 2-0 record in both singles and doubles. Senior 
Paige Tromblee and junior 
Kennedy Alexis both went undefeated (2-0) on the day as well, while junior 
Sydney Alphabet won three of her four matches.
 
Union saw success in the "B" Singles bracket, as Jacobs and junior 
Skylar Semon combined for three wins. Jacobs reached the semifinals with a pair of easy victories, putting an 8-0 loss on SUNY Geneseo's Talia Wutz before coming back to defeat Rochester's Jasmin Toor, 8-2. Semon started her day with an 8-4 win over Rochester's Lilly Caldwell and came a tiebreaker short of joining Jacobs in the semifinals, falling 8-7 (8-6) to Yvette Karera of St. Lawrence.
 
The Garnet Chargers also went 3-1 in the "C" Singles bracket on day one. Junior 
Claire Langille moved into the semifinals thanks to an 8-3 win over Rochester's Neha Dania and an 8-2 besting of Ithaca's Ava Casell. Alphabet won her first match of the day in the bracket as well, 8-5 over William Smith's Grace Magna, but came up short in an 8-2 loss to RPI's Kaaviya Kannan in the second round.
 
Junior 
Chara Meidani and sophomore 
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra earned two wins to clinch a spot in the "A" Doubles semifinals. The pair started with a hard-fought 8-7 (7-4) win over the Rochester tandem of Josephine Libby and Katie Yang, then took down RPI's Victoria Sarabosing and Gauri Muliyil, 8-2. In other "A" Doubles action, Semon and Langille fell 8-1 to RPI's Lorna Flores Gonzalez and Nicole Ridenour.
 
Union saw all three entries win a match and two reach the semifinals in the "B" Doubles bracket as well. Jacobs continued her undefeated day with two more wins, teaming with Alphabet to knock off SUNY Geneseo's Elena DeRiso and Emily Rowe, 8-1, and Rochester's Dalia Mahmoud and Neha Dania, 8-5. In the bottom half of the bracket, Tromblee and Alexis took down Katie Kujawa and Joann Catalano of SUNY Geneseo by an 8-6 score and then bested William Smith's Mia Tetrault and Teghan Torrey, 8-1. First-years 
Scarlet Carrara and 
Calista Finkelstein also won their debut match, easing past William Smith's Emma Johnston and Bethany Walker before falling in the second round.
 
In the "A" Singles flight, Meidani and Arizpe-Sierra both fell in the first round, with Meidani dropping an 8-5 decision to Flores Gonzalez and Arizpe-Sierra succumbing to St. Lawrence's Molly Jespersen by an 8-4 score.
 
Union will be back on the courts tomorrow for day two of the Mary Hosking Invitational beginning at 8:30 a.m.
