SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Union will be represented in the finals or semifinals of all four singles flights tomorrow after a very successful first day of the 2024 Union Invitational, held at the Union Tennis Courts on Saturday.
Junior
Chara Meidani led Union with three wins on the day, winning both of her singles matches and her lone doubles contest. Four other Garnet Chargers had two wins on the day and nine different players recorded at least one victory to start the weekend.
Meidani earned a pair of wins to reach tomorrow's "A" Singles final, posting an 8-5 win over New Paltz's Sydney Sladicka and then outlasting St. Lawrence's Molly Jespersen in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4). She will face SLU's Ariana Karera in the final after Karera knocked off two Garnet Chargers, defeating first-year
Samantha Jacobs 8-6 in the first round and sophomore
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra in the second round, 8-4. Arizpe-Sierra won her first match of the day, 8-6 over New Paltz's Justine Stanejko.
Jacobs bounced back to reach tomorrow's consolation final of the "A" bracket, beating Stanejko by an 8-3 score.
In the "B" Singles bracket, junior
Skylar Semon fought her way to tomorrow's final with a pair of wins on Saturday, sweeping Oneonta's Dani Copp 8-0 and getting past SLU's Ellie McDermed by an 8-4 score. She will go up against SLU's Yvette Karera, who defeated Union junior
Sydney Alphabet in the first round and classmate
Claire Langille in the semifinals by the same 8-3 score.
Alphabet rebounded from her first-round loss to post an 8-4 win over New Paltz's Amirah Alston in the consolation semifinals, booking her spot in tomorrow's consolation final.
The "C" Singles final will be an all-Union affair after junior

Calista Finkelstein both earned a pair of wins. In the top half of the bracket, Alexis defeated SLU's Ellie Fritz, 8-6, in the first round and then knocked off New Paltz's Angelica Gabriel by an 8-3 score. Finkelstein dropped only two games in her two matches on Saturday, defeating New Paltz's Olivia Kunz and SLU's Elisa Iuri both by the score of 8-1.
Senior
Paige Tromblee is the lone Union player still alive in the "D" Singles bracket thanks to a pair of victories, 8-2 over SLU's Mia McNamara and 8-6 over New Paltz's Olivia Eifert. First-year
Scarlet Carrara won her first-round match over SLU's Ashlyn Strobel, 8-1, before dropping an 8-5 contest to New Paltz's Olivia Grabowski.
In the first round of "A" Doubles action, Arizpe-Sierra and Meidani earned an 8-3 win over Gabriel and Sladicka of New Paltz and will play SLU's Karera tandem tomorrow in the semifinals after their 8-3 win over Alphabet and Jacobs. Langille and Semon also fell in their first-round match to Stanejko and Isabel van der Veen of New Paltz, 8-2.
Only three matches were played in the "B" Doubles bracket on Saturday. Carrara and Finkelstein fell to SLU's Fritz and Iuri by an 8-4 score, while Alexis and Tromblee will wait until tomorrow for their quarterfinal match.
Union will return to the courts tomorrow for day two action at the Union Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
