SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Juniors
Chara Meidani and
Kennedy Alexis took home the "A" and "C" Singles titles, respectively, to lead the Union College women's tennis team at the annual Union Invitational, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Union Tennis Courts.
As a team, Union earned two first-place finishes, three finals appearances, and three consolation victories as part of another successful weekend on the courts.
After a pair of victories on Saturday to reach the title round, Meidani dispatched Ariane Karera of St. Lawrence by a 6-3, 7-5 score in Sunday's final to win the "A" Singles title, thwarting Karera's attempt to go through all three Union entries in the bracket.
Union was guaranteed a winner in the "C" Singles flight as Alexis faced off with first-year teammate
Calista Finkelstein. After dropping the first set by a 6-3 margin, Alexis fought back to earn a 7-5 second set and send the match to a supertiebreaker, which the junior won by a 10-7 margin to claim the title.
Junior
Skylar Semon came a supertiebreaker short of a title for herself in the "B" Singles final, as she took the first set from Yvette Karera, 6-2, only to see Karera come back for a 6-1 second-set win and a 10-4 supertiebreaker triumph.
Union also earned a pair of consolation final wins as well on Sunday. First-year
Samantha Jacobs took fifth place in the "A" Singles bracket by winning the consolation side, sweeping New Paltz's Sydney Sladicka, 8-0, after winning once yesterday. Junior
Sydney Alphabet also emerged from the "B" Singles consolation, besting Isabel van der Veen of New Paltz by an 8-4 score to earn a fifth-place finish.
In addition to her singles win, Meidani also earned a third-place finish alongside sophomore
Luisa Arizpe-Sierra in the "A" Doubles bracket, rebounding from an 8-4 loss to eventual champions Ariana Karera and Yvette Karera to defeat New Paltz's van der Veen and Justine Stanejko by the same score. On the other side of the bracket, Semon and classmate
Claire Langille earned a fifth-place finish by winning the consolation bracket, defeating Dani Copp and Haley Peck of New Paltz by an 8-1 score before getting past teammates Alphabet and Jacobs, 8-3.
Union will take a brief break from individual play on Wednesday to begin its Liberty League schedule with a 4 p.m. match against Bard College at the Union Tennis Couirts.
