GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team started play at William Smith College's Mary Hosking Invitational on Saturday, with two entries still alive in the main draw after the first day of competition.
Senior
Sydney Alphabet is the team's only singles competitor still alive after a pair of wins in "C" Singles action. The senior dropped only three games combined in an 8-2 win over SLU's Maya Stepic and a 8-1 victory over Maddy Buck of William Smith. Classmate
Kennedy Alexis won her first round match over Anika Galkiewicz of RIT but fell in the quarterfinals to RPI's Neha Saraswatula, 8-3. First-year
Jenny Park fell 8-2 to Taylor Chandler of RPI in the opening round but advanced past Ithaca's Martina Nicora in the consolation bracket.
In the "A" Singles bracket, senior
Chara Meidani earned a first-round win over Lauren Kallas of the University of Rochester by an 8-3 score before falling to RPI's Gauri Miliiyil, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. Classmate
Skylar Semon dropped an 8-4 decision to Nicole Ridenour in the first round, but rebounded for a clean sweep of RIT's Emily Greb in the first round of the consolation bracket.
Three Garnet Chargers fell in the first round of the "B" Singles bracket, but all three came back to win their first consolation matches. Sophomore
Calista Finkelstein fell 8-0 to RPI's Kaaviya Kannan before coming back for an 8-5 win over Rochester's Jasmin Toor. First-year
Megan McCusker dropped a hard-fought 8-5 match to Juliette Ceas of RPI, but came back to knock off RIT's Melanie Saborio by the same score. Senior
Claire Langille shook off an 8-4 defeat to St. Lawrence's Elisa Iuri by getting past Ithaca's Madeline Sutro, 8-6.
Finklestein and Park advanced to tomorrow's semifinals of the "B" Doubles bracket thanks to a 6-1 win over Kyra Terman and Jade Vadeboncoeur of Ithaca. Alphabet and McCusker dropped a 6-0 match to Hailey Kornbluth and Natalie Debowski of Rochester in their first match.
In "A" doubles action, Semon and Langille swept Haley Levine and Grace Magna to open the day before coming up short to RIT's Kira Kronenberg and Maya McDaniel, 6-1. Alexis and Meidani fell in a 7-5 tiebreaker to start their day before bouncing back with a 6-2 win over Mae Kellersman and Bethany Walker of William Smith.
The Garnet Chargers will return to the court tomorrow for the second and final day of the Mary Hosking Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
