MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Union College men's cross country team took sixth place out of 11 squads at a very competitive Cardinal Invitational, hosted by Wesleyan University at the Wes Furhman Trails Cross Country Course on Saturday.
Union placed sixth with 226 points on the day to finish in the middle of the strong field. USTFCCCA #20 Wesleyan and #16 Massachusetts Institute of Technology tied for first place with 44 points, followed by #23 Amherst College with 66 points. Regionally ranked Worcester Polytechnic Institute (103) and U.S. Coast Guard Academy (192) rounded out the stacked top-five.
Junior
Bretton Garrick was Union's first finisher once again on Saturday, placing 36th out of 155 runners in 26:04.6. Senior
Will Plante and sophomore
Liam Fitzgibbon finished just outside the top-50 for Union, with Plante taking 51st in 26:33.5 and Fitzgibbon crossing the line less than three seconds later in 26:36.2.
First-years
Greg Keane and
Cole Lewek completed Union's scoring quintet on the day, with Keane placing 63rd in 26:53.0 and Lewek ending up 69th after a 27:05.6 finish.
The Garnet Chargers will take next week off from competition before returning to the course on October 3 for the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa.
