Women's Tennis Finishes Weekend at Union Invitational

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team finished off the opening weekend of the 2025-26 season by competing on day two of the Union Invitational, held at the Union Tennis Courts.

Union had two main draw entries left after yesterday's first day of singles competition, with senior Kennedy Alexis and first-year Jenny Park taking part in the "D" Singles bracket. Park advanced the championship round thanks to an 8-3 semifinal victory over St. Lawrence's Sarah Oldland, but she came up just short to Angelica Gabriel of SUNY New Paltz in the finals by an 8-6 score. Alexis came a tiebreaker short of joining Park in the finals, dropping an 8-7 (7-4) match to Gabriel.

Sophomore Calista Finkelstein and first-year Megan McCusker also made their way to the title round of the "B" Doubles bracket as well. After winning once yesterday, the pair defeated SLU's Kate Butler and Abigail Sicuranza by an 8-4 margin in the semifinals; however, the duo lost by the same score to another SLU tandem, Oldland and Elisa Iuri, in the final match.

Union went 3-1 in consolation singles matches on Sunday. In the "B" singles bracket, McCusker knocked off Patrycja Filonik of New Paltz by an 8-3 score in the semis but did not get the chance to compete against New Paltz's Sydney Sladicka in the consolation final. After falling in the main draw semis yesterday, Finkelstein came back to take third place with an 8-5 win over Iuri. Senior Sydney Alphabet also took third in the "C" singles bracket after defeating SLU's Eleanor McDermed in the third-place matchup.

The Garnet Chargers also won all four consolation doubles matches as well on the day. In the "A" bracket, Alexis and classmate Chara Meidani earned a pair of wins to take fifth place, besting Ithaca's Aenessa Rylski and Madeleine Sutro, 8-5, before knocking off classmates Claire Langille and Skylar Semon by an 8-3 score in an all-Union matchup. Langille and Semon reached the final thanks to an 8-5 win over McDermed and Ariane Karera of SLU. Alphabet and Park also earned fifth place in the "B" bracket by defeating Gabriel and Nina Genzone of New Paltz, 8-6.

Union will return to action next weekend at William Smith College's Mary Hosking Invitational, beginning on Saturday morning in Geneva.
