CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's outdoor track & field team finished in sixth place out of eight teams after the second and final day of the Liberty League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held on Saturday at St. Lawrence University's Merrick-Pinkard Track & Field Complex.
Union ended the championship with 31 points, well ahead of Vassar College (nine points) in seventh and 16.5 points back of the host Saints. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute took top honors on the men's side with 317 points, more than doubling second-place University of Rochester.
Senior
Mason Lang earned All-Liberty League honorable mention in the shot put with a third-place finish, starting his day with a top toss of 13.89 meters and watching it hold up from there. Seniors
Nick Entner and
Tony Cocchiaro posted season-best distances in the event as well with marks of 12.56 meters and 12.11 meters, respectively, while first-year
Sam Sparks had a top toss of 10.98 meters.
Sophomore
Liam Fitzgibbon picked up a fourth-place finish in the finals of the 800 meters, earning five points thanks to his time of 1:54.53.
Senior
Jason Bois earned three points for Union with a sixth-place finish in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in a season-best 15.31 seconds.
The Garnet Chargers started their afternoon by placing sixth in the 4x100-meter relay, thanks to a combined run of 44.50 seconds from Bois, juniors
Aaron Binion and
Kye Norcross, and sophomore
Aidan Bradley. The day also concluded with a relay, as Bradley, seniors
Drew Hill and
Aidan Savitt, and junior
Jackson Klehr finished the 4x400 in a season-best 3:29.91 to place fifth.
Junior
Bretton Garrick represented Union in the 1,500 meters, running the nearly four laps in 4:04.77 to place 14th overall out of 25 runners. First-year
Greg Keane also made his outdoor championship debut in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 16:21.11 to place 24th.
In the discus throw, Sparks earned a top-20 finish with a throw of 31.16 meters, followed by sophomore
Angelo Martello with a career-best toss of 29.47 meters.
Qualified student-athletes will continue the spring season at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championships, held on May 13 and 14 at Ursinus College.
