Men's Track Sits Sixth At Midway Point of Liberty Leagues

CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's outdoor track team earned 10 points to finish in sixth place after day one of the Liberty League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held on Friday afternoon at St. Lawrence University's Merrick-Pinkard Track & Field Complex.
 
Union scored in one of the six final events on Friday's first day, but still boasted nine season-best and two career-best performances while setting the stage for good results tomorrow. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has the lead after day one with 93 points, 39 points clear of Rochester Institute of Technology in second.
 
Senior Nick Entner was Union's top finisher of the day, taking second and earning eight points in the javelin throw with a career-best mark of 54.57 meters, a mark that qualified him for the AARTFC Championships as well. Senior Mason Lang contributed two points in the event as well with a seventh-place throw of 46.39 meters, while first-year Sam Sparks (40.99 meters) and sophomore Aaron Al-Marayati (36.71 meters) also competed in the event.
 
Senior Jason Bois started off the day for Union by booking his spot in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles, finishing sixth in a season-best time of 15.40 seconds.
 
Sophomore Liam Fitzgibbon qualified for the finals in the 800 meters with a 1:55.05 run, good for seventh-best among the 27 competitors. Juniors Will Bonnette and Michael Fitzmaurice both set new career-bests in the 800 as well on Friday, with Bonnette finishing 12th in 1:55.79 and Fitzmaurice taking 16th in 1:56.59.
 
First-years Alex Colangelo and Cole Lewek placed 11th and 12th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with season-best times, as Colangelo's 10:11.20 finish was just a few seconds ahead of Lewek in 10:14.42.
 
Junior Aaron Binion represented Union in the dashes, running the 100-meter dash in 11.25 seconds to place 16th and earning a top-20 finish in the 200 dash with a time of 22.69 seconds.
 
Senior Drew Hill was Union's top finisher in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in a career-best 51.27 seconds to place 17th overall. He was joined in the event by senior Aidan Savitt, who placed 20th in a season-best 51.70 seconds, and sophomore Aidan Bradley, who placed 24th in 52.91 seconds.
 
Lang led three Union entries in the hammer throw with a 12th-place toss of 42.87 meters, followed by Entner in 19th place (37.24 meters) and senior Tony Cocchiaro in 21st place (35.02 meters).
 
Sophomore Alan Mackic finished the field events with a long jump of 5.77 meters to place 16th, while junior Ben Pistiner closed out the day for Union with a 35:09.79 finish in the grueling 10,000 meters
 
The Garnet Chargers will be back to the track tomorrow for day two of the conference championships beginning at 10:30 a.m.
