Semon Earns Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Skylar Semon of the Union College women's tennis team received a major honor from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association last week, as she was named the Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner for the Northeast Region.

The award, which was first given out in 1982, is presented to men's and women's student-athletes who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements in ways that embody the legacy of tennis icon and humanitarian Arthur Ashe Jr.  Semon was one of four regional winners of the award, earning the honor out of approximately 330 Division III programs that sponsor tennis.

Semon has been a leader both on and off the court for Union, serving as team captain for the last two years and helping guide the Garnet Chargers to four straight Liberty League Tournament appearances. A three-time CSC Academic All-District honoree, she earned Union's Scholar-Athlete of the Award for her class in each of her first three seasons on campus.

On the court, Semon held down the first-singles and second-doubles slots for Union in her senior season, earning All-Liberty League honors for the first time in her career with honorable mention in singles. She completed her time in Schenectady with 45 singles wins and 44 doubles victories to her credit, ranking fourth and second, respectively, in program history.
