Shayne Gostisbehere Wins Stanley Cup

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Former Union College men's hockey star Shayne Gostisbehere won the Stanley Cup on Sunday night as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Nights 3-0 in Game 6 of the championship series.

Gostisbehere is the 35th player in NHL history to win both a Stanley Cup and an NCAA Championship. He led Union to the pinnacle of college hockey in 2014, earning a +7 on-ice rating in the title game against Minnesota during a 7-4 victory and also was named the Most Outstanding Player in that year's Frozen Four. During the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, he scored 12 points on three goals and nine assists, giving him the second-most points by a defenseman in a single postseason in Carolina's franchise history.

Gostisbehere is the first Union College hockey player to win a Stanley Cup and was one of two ECAC Hockey players on the Hurricanes this season along with Princeton's Eric Robinson. The Hurricanes featured a total of nine former NCAA Division-I hockey players on their roster as well.

In 66 career playoff games for Gostisbehere in the NHL, he has 29 points on eight goals and 21 assists. He made his playoff debut with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2015-16 and has made the postseason in three of the last four seasons: once with the Detroit Red Wings and twice with the Hurricanes.

In his professional career, Gostisbehere has played with four NHL franchises, totaling 744 regular-season games played, 117 goals, and 345 assists. He played all 82 games for the Arizona Coyotes (now the Utah Mammoth) in 2021-22 and posted a single-season career-high 65 points for Philadelphia in 2017-18.

During his three years in Schenectady, the 2014 NCAA champion recorded 82 points with 22 goals and 60 assists. He was honored as a Hobey Baker finalist in 2013-14 and an AHCA/CCM All-America East first-team selection.

Gostisbehere was the 11th Union hockey player to be selected in the NHL Draft, going in the third round of the 2012 draft to the Flyers. He is one of 12 Union players to play in the NHL, and after finishing his 13th NHL season, has enjoyed the longest NHL career of any former Union hockey star.
