Women's Tennis Starts Season with Day One of Union Invitational

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team started off the 2026-27 season with day-one action at the Union College Invitational, held on Saturday morning and afternoon at the Union Tennis Courts.
 
Union earned four singles victories and two doubles wins on the first day of the weekend, with the two doubles entries still alive in main-bracket action headed into Sunday's day two.
 
In the "A" singles bracket, first-year Loden Bradstreet defeated SUNY New Paltz's Patrycja Filonik by a 6-2, 6-2 score in her collegiate debut. The rookie dropped her semifinal match to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Gauri Muliyil, 6-0, 6-4, in the semifinal round.
 
First-year Ava Boncordo won one match and came a tiebreaker short of reaching the final in the "B" Singles bracket. The rookie came back to knock off Yvette Karera of St. Lawrence University, 2-6, 6-1, (10-7), in the quarterfinals before falling by the same fate to RPI's Juliette Ceas in the semifinals, 4-6, 6-4, (10-8). Fellow first-year Maddy Alecia also made her debut in the "B" bracket, dropping a 6-0, 6-1 match to Kayla Wheeler of RPI.
 
Both Union entries fell in the first round of the "C" singles bracket, as sophomore Jenny Park came a tiebreaker short against Ithaca College's Ava Casell, 6-4, 2-6, (10-7), and first-year Violet Tran dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to SLU's Callie Perrin.
 
Sophomore Caroline Fitzsimmons moved past Ithaca's Julia Huff in the first round of the "D" Singles bracket to earn her first collegiate victory before falling to Sarah Oldland of SLU, 8-1, in the quarterfinals. Junior Scarlet Carrara also earned a first-round win, 8-4 over Ithaca's Anna Harbin, before an 8-1 quarterfinal loss to SLU's Ellie Fritz, while first-year Megan Woods dropped an 8-2 decision to Delphine Larosiliere of New Paltz in the first round.
 
In doubles action, Bradstreet and Alecia advanced to Sunday's "A" Doubles semifinal with an 8-6 victory over Filonik and Alex Krol of New Paltz. In "B" Doubles action, Fitzsimmons and Tran reached the quarterfinals with an 8-5 win over Anna Harbin and Jade Vadeboncoeur of Ithaca. Also in the "B" flight, Park and Boncordo came up just short to Ithaca's Zuri Freeman and Madeleine Sutro in an 8-7 (7-5) loss, and the tandem of Carrara and Woods dropped an 8-1 match to Larosiliere and Eva DeJesus of New Paltz.
 
Teams will be back on the courts tomorrow morning for the second and final day of the Union Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
