UTICA, N.Y. – The Union College men's indoor track and field team started off the new season with one new school record, several regional and conference qualifications, and many new personal bests at the Utica University Holiday Classic, held on Saturday at the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center.
Junior
Jason Bois got his season off to a record-setting start, breaking his own program standard in the 60-meter hurdles by over a tenth of a second and booking him a spot at the AARTFC Indoor Championships with a prelim time of 8.49 seconds. He followed up with a 8.59 in the finals to take second place.
Sophomore
Nate Okwaning led the field in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, qualifying for the final with a top time of 7.04 seconds. He was joined in the final by senior
Sam Ahern, who placed fourth in the preliminaries by finishing in 7.10 seconds. Okwaning's time of 7.08 seconds in the final was good for a fifth-place finish, followed by Ahern in seventh in 7.11 seconds.
Ahern also took second place in the 300-meter dash, finishing in 35.70 seconds, followed by first-year
Aidan Bradley with a time of 37.47 seconds to place seventh.
First-year
Liam Fitzgibbon paced three Union runners in the mile, taking second place overall with a time of 4:30.31. Junior
Will Plante also earned a top-seven finish in the 27-runner field, crossing the line in 4:36.74, while sophomore
Jackson Klehr posted a career-best time of 4:47.72.
Junior
Mason Lang was the team's top performer in the field events, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a top distance of 13.49 meters.
Junior
Aidan Savitt was the team's lone entry in the 600 meters, grabbing seventh place with a time of 1:28.13. Senior
Thomas Breimer placed eighth in the 5,000 meters, crossing the line in 16:28.36 to finish in the top-half of the 16-runner field. Classmates
Chris Bulmer and
Kyle Collins placed 10th and 11th in the 800 meters as well, finishing in 2:08.06 and 2:08.49, respectively.
Union will break for the holidays before return to action on January 11 at the Middlebury College Snowflake Invitational.
