CORTLAND, N.Y. - The 4x100 relay team of first-year
Nate Okwaning, senior
Ryan Hilliard, first-year
Aaron Binion, and junior
Sam Ahern kicked off competition in the 2024 AARTFC Outdoor Championships for the Union College men's track and field program in a big way Wednesday, breaking the program record they set earlier in the season en route to a fifth-place finish in Union's first event of the Championships.
The quartet ran a blazing 41.94-second time, breaking the 42.00-second mark for the first time in program history to defeat the 42.01-second mark that broke the previous 20-year-old 42.11-second record at the RPI Capital District Classic at the end of April. The time was good enough for the group to finish squarely in fifth to round out the top five and pick up four points to set the tone in the opening event of the two-day Regionals.
Union's other relay team competing Wednesday, the 4x400 squad consisting of Binion, first-year
Jackson Klehr, sophomore
Aidan Savitt, and Hilliard, finished their season with a team season-best time in the event of 3:26.87.
Ahern and Okwaning came back later in the day to compete in the 100-meter individual trials. Ahern finished just three hundredths outside of a final qualifying spot with his 10.87-second time which was ninth best, while Okwaning timed an 11.14-second race to finish off an impressive rookie season with another strong time.
Sophomore
Jason Bois began individual competition for the Garnet Chargers in the 110-meter hurdle prelims, coming two-tenths of a second outside a qualifying spot for the finals with his 15.38-second time.
Day two of competition is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m., with senior
Charlie Alekson and junior
Ben Neff kicking off day two for the Garnet Chargers at 12:50 p.m. in the 1500.
