NEW ORLEANS, La. – Senior
Sam Ahern and junior
Jason Bois of the Union College men's indoor track & field team both earned All-Mideast Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for the 2024-25 indoor season, the association announced on Tuesday.
To earn All-Region honors, individuals must finish in the top-five of the region in an event and relay teams must finish in the region's top-three. Ahern and Bois earn the sixth and seventh indoor All-Region honors in program history, with Ahern becoming the first Union student-athlete to earn All-Region honors on the track in multiple years.
Heading into this weekend's NCAA Championships, Ahern boasts the second-fastest 200-meter dash in the region, thanks to a time of 21.93 seconds at the D-III Elite Meet on February 14. Ahern's time ranks him 22nd in Division III this season and was fast enough to earn him a spot in the upcoming national championships, where he is seeded 19th. The senior, who earned All-Region recognition in the 200 in both the indoor and outdoor seasons last year, also just missed All-Region honors in the 60-meter dash, with his program-record time of 6.91 seconds at the Liberty League Indoor Championships placing him sixth in the region.
Bois earns the first indoor All-Region honor of his career after picking up the recognition in the outdoor 110-meter hurdles last spring. The junior recorded the fifth-fastest time in the region in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.46 seconds at the Utica Blue and Orange Invitational on February 7 to once again break his own program record. He took over a tenth of a second off his record time over the course of this season.
In addition to Ahern and Bois, several other Union athletes finished in the top-20 of the region as well this year. Junior
Mason Lang joined Ahern and Bois in the top-10 regionally with a mark of 14.26 meters in the shot put that ranked him eighth. Sophomore
Nate Okwaning joined Ahern in the top-20 in the 60-meter dash, with his top time of 7.04 seconds ranking 15th in the Mideast Region. Senior
Ben Neff ranks 19th in the mile with a career-best time of 4:19.24 and classmate
Ryan Russell finished 20th in the 3000 meters with his best time of 8:36.01 as well. In addition, the men's distance medley relay ranked 11th in the region with a time of 10:54.53 and the 4x400 relay finished 12th after a 3:30.61 result at the conference championships.
Ahern will finish up the indoor season by representing Union at the NCAA Championships on Friday, while the remainder of the team will begin the outdoor season on March 28-29 at William & Mary.
