ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore
Ashley Sheldon made it back-to-back titles in the high jump and senior
Cat Dacey shattered the school record in the 5,000 meters to lead the Union College women's outdoor track & field team to a sixth-place finish at the Liberty League Outdoor Championships, held on Friday and Saturday at the RIT Track & Field Complex.
Union finished the two days with 40.5 points, earning points in 10 different events. The women also finished the second day with six career-bests in addition to three AARTFC Championship qualifers.
Sheldon defended her conference title in the high jump, matching her own program standard by clearing a facility-record 1.67 meters on her second attempt. The height, her best of the season by four inches, qualified her for the AARTFC Championships and vaulted her into a tie for 15th place nationally in the event. Junior
Grace Ardito also took part in the high jump for Union, tying for sixth place with a top height of 1.42 meters.
Dacey ran the 5,000 meters for the first time in her career and completely smashed the program record, taking over 40 seconds off the standard set a few weeks ago by sophomore
Annabel Dobash with a time of 17:44.05 that earned her a sixth-place finish and qualified her for the AARTFC Championships. Dobash also took seven seconds off her then-program-record time, finishing in 18:20.55 to finish in 11th place.
First-year
Kyleigh Record finished third to earn All-Liberty League honorable mention in the 800 meters, just outpacing Rochester's Rita Sciortino by one-hundredth of a second with a time of 2:16.89.
Senior
Gabby Baker came less than a second from All-Conference honors in the 400-meter dash, posting a season-best for the second-straight day with a time of 58.85 seconds that placed her fourth in the final.
In addition to her record run in the 5,000, Dacey also earned three points in the 1,500 meters, finishing in 4:43.76 to place sixth. Classmate
Caroline Kelly set a career best in the event in her final collegiate race, crossing the line in 4:54.41.
Union started the day with the 4x100-meter relay, with the quartet of Ardito, Baker, Sheldon and sophomore
Kat Doran taking fifth in 50.77 seconds. The Garnet Chargers also placed fifth in the 4x400-relay, qualifying for the AARTFC Championships thanks to a time of 4:05.09 from Ardito, Baker, Doran and Record.
Sheldon also earned two points for Union in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 15.62 seconds to place seventh, while Doran earned a solo point with an eighth-place time of 12.82 seconds in the 100-meter dash.
In the discus throw, both first-year
Charlotte Knight and sophomore
Epephanie LaBoy posted career-best distances, with Knight posting a top mark of 23.71 meters and LaBoy registering a mark of 20.36 meters. Seniors
Lauren Armstrong and
Sundee Kroyer also represented Union in the shot put, posting top marks of 8.39 meters and 7.07 meters, respectively.
Qualified student-athletes will continue their outdoor season on May 14-15 at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championships at Williams College.
