NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Union College men's indoor track & field team combined for 16 season-best performances to finish off a strong Saturday at the non-scoring NYU D-III Invitational, hosted by New York University at the Armory.
Sophomore
Liam Fitzgibbon posted the team's only victory of the day, posting the best time of his career by finishing the 800 meters in 1:55.55 to best 49 other runners. The team's other three entries in the event all finished with career-best times as well, as junior
Michael Fitzmaurice (1:58.67) placed eighth overall, junior
Will Bonnette (2:00.32) finished in the top-20 and first-year
Sacha Silvia (2:05.00) earned a top-30 result.
Senior
Jason Bois earned a top-five finish for Union in the 60-meter hurdles, qualifying for the finals with a time of 8.89 seconds in the prelims and then bettering his time with an 8.81-second finish that moved him up from seventh to fifth place.
Junior
Nate Okwaning led Union in the 60-meter dash, crossing the line in 7.12 seconds to place 17th out of 43 runners. In the unseeded portion of the event, sophomore
Alan Mackic posted the best time of his career by finishing in 7.91 seconds.
Okwaning also led the team in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.06 seconds, followed closely by classmate
Aaron Binion with a career-best finish of 23.14 seconds. Sophomore
Aidan Bradley posted his season-best 200 time as well on the day, ending his time on the track in 23.55 seconds.
Bradley and senior
Aidan Savitt both qualified for the Liberty League Championships in the 400-meter dash, with Bradley finishing 20th in 52.62 seconds and Savitt coming in 24th in 52.95 seconds. Junior
Jackson Klehr also posted a season-best time in the event, finishing in 53.16 seconds.
First-year
Cole Lewek was the first Garnet Charger to cross the finish line in the mile, taking 16th in 4:38.38. Three teammates posted career-best times in the event as well: first-year
Greg Keane crossed the line in 4:34.14, junior
Ben Pistiner finished in 4:44.82, and first-year
Will Barry crossed the line in 4:46.20.
Junior
Bretton Garrick made his first appearance of the year in the 3,000 meters and booked his spot in the conference championships with a time of 8:47.14, good for fourth place out of 19 runners.
Senior
Mason Lang led three Union competitors in the shot put with a top mark of 13.68 meters to place seventh overall, while seniors
Nick Entner (13.12 meters) and
Tony Cocchiaro (11.95 meters) set new career-best and season-best standards, respectively. It was Entner's turn to lead the team in the weight throw, as his mark of 13.61 meters was good for an eighth-place finish.
Union will have one more competition before the upcoming conference championships, as the team heads to Army West Point next Saturday.
