MIDDLEBURY, Vt.- The Union College men's swimming and diving teams fell 174-124 to Middlebury College on Saturday in Vermont. The Dutchmen earned five first-place finishes and eight second-place finishes.
Union was led by
Adam Herzog who claimed first-place twice during the meet. The sophomore took the 1,000-yard free with a time of 10:09.54, as well as the 500-yard free with 4:56.08. This is the second week in a row that Herzog has won the 500-yard free.
Ian Drillinger once again won both of his events. For the fourth straight week, the senior took the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of 310.95 and 355.95, respectively.
Sophomore Zach Wahl had a busy day for the Dutchmen, winning or placing second in three of his events. Wahl dominated the 100-yard fly for the second meet in a row with a time of 52.26 seconds. The New York native swam a time of 24.01 seconds to earn second-place in the 50-yard fly and took second in the 100-yard IM with 55.80 seconds, as well.
Several Dutchmen earned Top Three spots on Saturday, including
Nicholas Boncek. The sophomore earned a second-place finish when he clocked in at 1:49.68 in the 200-yard free. Junior
Matt Wahl was close behind with a time of 1:50.91 for third. Boncek also took third in the 100-yard free (50.12), trailing senior
Billy Breitweiser who swam a time of 50.07 seconds for second-place. Breitweiser trailed Herzog in the 1,000-yard free, swimming a time of 10:17.43 for third-place.
Sophomore
Andrew Welch earned two second-place finishes, swimming a time of 25.77 seconds in the 50-yard back and 54.44 seconds in the 100-yard back. He was followed in each event by senior
Michael Mooney for third-place finishes. Mooney clocked in at 25.78 seconds and 55.33, respectively.
The Dutchmen earned second-place in the 200-yard medley relay. The squad of Welch, senior
Alex Boyd and the Wahl brothers swam a collective time of 1:38.90. Boyd also earned a second-place finish in the 50-yard breast with a time of 28.54 seconds.
Union returns home to the Alumni Guy Pool on Saturday, January 28th, to take on Hamilton College at 2 p.m.
