ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College men's indoor track & field team combined for two wins, six personal bests and three Liberty League Championship qualifiers as part of a solid second day of the D-III Elite Meet, hosted by Nazareth University on Saturday at the Golisano Training Center.
Senior
Sam Ahern led the way by taking top honors once again in the 200-meter dash, moving into the top-12 nationally with a time of 21.93 seconds. Sophomore
Aaron Binion and first-year
Aidan Bradley both posted career-best times and qualified for the Liberty League Championships in the 200 as well, with Binion finishing in 23.16 seconds and Bradley coming in right behind in 23.27 seconds. Sophomore
Nate Okwaning also punched his ticket to the conference championship with a career-best time of 23.45 seconds.
Senior
Ryan Russell earned another first-place finish for Union in the 3,000 meters, besting 21 other runners with a personal-best time of 8:36.01. The senior sat in second for the first 1,200 meters before making his move into first and he did not relinquish the top spot the rest of the way. He was joined in the event by classmate
Thomas Breimer, who finished in a season-best 9:23.34.
Senior
Ben Neff led five Union competitors in the mile, placing seventh out of 42 runners with a time of 4:19.30. First-year
Liam Fitzgibbon and junior
Will Plante both earned top-20 finishes as well with career-best times: Fitzgibbon placed 18th in 4:29.79, followed closely by Plante with a 4:32.57 finish to take 20th. Sophomores
Michael Fitzmaurice (4:34.87) and
Bretton Garrick (4:37.54) rounded out the Garnet Chargers in the mile.
Junior
Jason Bois took seventh in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.89 seconds. He also matched his career-best in the high jump, clearing 1.72 meters.
Bradley also was the team's first runner to cross the finish line in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 53.01 seconds to place 24th. Junior
Aidan Savitt posted his best time of the season by crossing the line in 53.52 seconds, and first-year
Ziayan Omer finished in 54.14 seconds as well.
Senior
Kyle Collins represented Union in the 800 meters, placing 36th overall with a time of 2:06.51.
Union will have its final tune-up before the conference championships next Saturday at the Utica Fast Trax Invitational.
