ITHACA, N.Y. – Led by another school-record performance by senior
Sam Ahern in the 60-meter dash, the Union College men's indoor track & field team recorded four career bests and 12 points to sit in sixth place after day one of the 2025 Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at Ithaca College's Glazer Arena on Friday.
Despite not getting any points on day one, Ahern started his weekend well by resetting his program record again in the prelims of the 60-meter dash, crossing the line in 6.94 seconds to place second and earn a spot in tomorrow's final. Sophomore
Nate Okwaning came four-thousandths of a second away from reaching the final as well, as his time of 7.053 seconds just barely pushed him into ninth place, while first-year
Aidan Bradley placed 24th with a personal-best time of 7.28 seconds.
Junior
Mason Lang got the day started off right for Union in the shot put, taking second place to earn All-Conference second-team honors. The junior made the final with a toss of 13.58 meters on his third attempt, then came up with a day-best toss of 14.03 meters on his sixth and final attempt to jump over two competitors and take the second spot and earn eight points for the Garnet Chargers. He was joined in the event by juniors
Tony Cocchiaro and
Nick Entner, who posted top distances of 12.69 meters and 11.44 meters to place 11th and 24th, respectively.
Senior
Ben Neff made a late push to find his way onto the podium in the mile, placing seventh with a time of 4:19.24 that came 13 hundredths of a second from matching his own program standard. The senior was in ninth place with 200 meters to go, but finished with a 30.27-second lap to jump two runners and take seventh. Also in the mile, junior
Will Plante took 15th in 4:29.44 and sophomore
Michael Fitzmaurice posted a new career best by over 4.5 seconds with a 4:29.74 mile to place 16th.
Junior
Jason Bois earned his spot in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles tomorrow with a time of 8.66 seconds in Friday's prelims to sit in fifth place. Bois was joined in the event by senior
Liam Beck, who placed 14th in 9.30 seconds.
First-year
Alan Mackic posted the best mark of his career in the long jump, surpassing his previous best by over 18 inches with a top distance of 6.05 meters to place 13th overall.
In the 400-meter dash, junior
Aidan Savitt posted a season-best time of 53.22 seconds and first-year
Ziayan Omer finished in 54.70 seconds.
Representing Union in the 5,000 meters, senior
Thomas Breimer placed 16th in 16:29.10, followed by sophomore
Ben Pistiner in 17th with a time of 16:40.12.
Union closed out the first day with another podium finish in the distance medley relay, as the quartet of Bradley, Neff, sophomore
Bretton Garrick and first-year
Liam Fitzgibbon finished seventh in 10:54.53.
Union will be back in action on day two of the Liberty League Championships from Ithaca tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
