CANTON, N.Y. - The Union College men's and women's track and field programs are headed to the North Country to take part in the 2024 Liberty League Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted at Newell Field House on the campus of St. Lawrence University on Friday, February 23rd, and Saturday, February 24th.
The Championships return to Canton this year for the first time since 2018. The Union men finished sixth at the championship that year, while the women did not register a team score.
The men's team is looking to improve off their sixth place finish from last year's championships in Rochester, and will be well equipped to do so with participants in almost every event. After breaking his own Union record in the 200-meter dash at the Fastrack National Invite two weeks ago, Junior
Sam Ahern is the third-seed in the event, while holding the second-seed in the 60-meter dash, another event he holds the program record for, and is slated to participate on Union's 4x400 and distance medley relay teams.
Sophomore
Jason Bois also holds a second-seed, in the 60-meter hurdles, after he tied the program benchmark he set at the LL Indoor Championships last year at the season-opening Suffolk Relays in December before breaking his own record at the Pioneer Fast Trax Invitational in Utica at the beginning of February.
On the women's side, the Garnet Chargers are looking to best their seventh place spot at last year's indoor conference championship, and will look to follow record-breakers of their own. First-Year
Ashley Sheldon has etched her name into the program record book multiple times in her rookie campaign, and holds the top seed in the women's high jump, an event she has broke the Union record for three times over, and top-five seeds in the 60-meter hurdles, another event she has broken the program record for a trio of times, and the triple jump, where she set the new program best in her first ever collegiate event.
Junior
Cat Dacey, who after a historic cross country season broke the program record in the 3000 in the indoor season-opening event at the Suffolk Relays, is slated to compete in four events. The junior is the fifth-seed in the mile run, where she set a personal record her last time out at the Fastrack National Invite and finished in last year's event at the LL Championships, and the 11-seed in the 800-meter, where she finished sixth. Dacey is also slotted in on the program's 4x400 and women's distance medley relay units.
Each day's events are scheduled to kick off at 11:30 a.m. on Friday and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The men's heptathlon 60 meter kicks off the championships on Friday, with the 60 hurdles beginning the day on Saturday. Senior
Caroline Stanton's participation in the women's pentathlon at 11:45 on Friday will begin the Championship meet for the Garnet Chargers.
