John was undefeated in a total of 13 dual and triangular cross country meets in 1955 and 1956, and set new records in 1956 in meets at Union, Alfred, Colgate and Hamilton. He won the NYSSCC Championship in track in 1955, 1956 and 1957, and competed against all levels. John placed 11th in the IC4A Championships held at Michigan State, and set a Union record in the mile in 1957. He was a team captain for multiple seasons, and also a Class Marshall. John also earned the Botany Prize. "His speed, endurance and style were so outstanding that I can still visualize our team’s young phenom now…over a half century later" said Frank R. Kiwus, the captain of the 1954 track team.
