Athletics Hall of Fame
Susan Bassett served as the head men’s and women’s swimming & diving coach at Union for eight seasons, from 1987-88 through 1994-95. Under her tenure, Union student-athletes earned over 100 All-American honors and two individual national championships, while her teams combined for 13 national championship appearances.
The Dutchmen combined for six NCAA Championship appearances during her time on campus, including back-to-back top-10 finishes in her final two seasons of 1994 (sixth) and 1995 (fourth). The Dutchwomen made seven straight NCAA Championship appearances from 1989-95, including three top-10 finishes in a row from 1992-94. She was named the 1993 College Swimming Coaches Association of America Co-Coach of the Year and the NCAA Div. III Women's Coach of the Year, while also earning two NYSWCAA Swimming Coach of the Year honors in 1993 and 1994.
Bassett left Union in 1995 to take over as Director of Athletics at William Smith College, where she served for 10 years. She also has served in the same capacity at Carnegie Mellon University from 2005-13 and at Ithaca College since 2013. Bassett served as chair of the NCAA Division III Management Council and was elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators in 2003. She is a 1979 Ithaca College graduate and received her master’s from Indiana in 1980.
